The Democratic Party for the People (DPFP) held its first national meeting of secretaries general under the new Tamaki leadership at the party headquarters on Sept. 24.

With regard to election cooperation with the Japanese Communist Party (JCP) in the House of Councillors in summer 2019, the DPFP leadership indicated that it plans to tap Shimin Rengo, a citizens’ group calling for the revocation of the security legislation, as mediator.

Party leader Yuichiro Tamaki and his colleagues stressed that “we must absolutely not do things that will benefit the ruling parties,” seeking understanding for the policy of pursuing a broad coalition of opposition parties. However, certain local chapters voiced reservations about collaboration with the JCP since simultaneous local elections are taking place next year before the Upper House election.
