Foreign Minister Taro Kono gave a speech at a meeting held to commemorate the 100th birthday of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela, at the UN headquarters on Sept. 24 (Sept. 25 in Japan). He called for UN reforms, including the reform of the Security Council.

In his speech, Kono said that the United Nations “needs to be able to take action more speedily and effectively (in conflict prevention and other matters).”

He also indicated Japan’s readiness to contribute to peace building in Africa through the TICAD (Tokyo International Conference on African Development) meeting in Yokohama in August 2019.
