TOKYO – Takuya Hirai, newly appointed minister in charge of information technology policy, serves as chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s committee on IT strategy.

The 60-year-old native of Kagawa Prefecture, western Japan, supported Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the LDP leadership election in September as a public relations expert.

The new minister, the eldest son of former labor minister Takushi Hirai, hopes to promote the digitalization of government operations.

In his spare time, he enjoys playing the guitar and writing music.
