TOKYO – Masatoshi Ishida, the new minister of internal affairs and communications, is known for his managerial skills and experience in the House of Representatives.

The 66-year-old was first elected to the lower house in 2002 in a by-election. Ishida displayed his ability for coordination in Diet affairs.

In the 2012 presidential election of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, he supported then Secretary General Shigeru Ishiba, but pivoted to back Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the party presidential election last month.

To support necktie makers facing slumping sales amid Japan’s “Cool Biz” energy-saving drive, Ishida called for fellow politicians to tuck a handkerchief in their breast pocket.
