Asahi and Sankei wrote that new Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki, who officially assumed his duties on Thursday, stated at a news conference that he will make utmost efforts to achieve the closure and return of the Futenma base as soon as possible and halt the construction of a new base in Henoko. The new Okinawa chief added that he will seek dialogue with the U.S. and Japanese governments regarding the FRF construction at Henoko. Sankei quoted him as saying, however, that he cannot say where that Futenma base should be relocated and that the prefectural government cannot interfere in U.S. military operations.

Meanwhile, Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga told a press briefing on Thursday that the GOJ believes that the Henoko plan is the only solution that will both maintain deterrence and remove the danger at Futenma and that the central government is prepared to hold dialogue with the new governor.
