Sankei took up press remarks on Wednesday by Trade Minister Seko, in which he said he will attend a ministerial conference on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) initiative in Singapore this weekend. According to the daily, the momentum for an early conclusion of the mega-free trade framework is mounting rapidly among its 16 members amid the Trump administration’s apparent tilt toward protectionism. Seko underscored that he is determined to “lead the discussions” at the conference so as to forge a rough consensus among the participants this year.

In a related story, Nikkei took up a speech delivered in Tokyo yesterday by visiting Vietnamese Prime Minister Phuc, who said that the RCEP negotiations are “close to conclusion.”
