Gist of joint news conference after Japan-France summit, Oct. 17

The following is the gist of the joint news conference by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and French President Emmanuel Macron:

 

International trade

 

Abe: The two countries will cooperate in working for the early effectuation of the Japan-EU economic partnership agreement (EPA) as advocates of free trade.

 

Macron: Japan will be hosting the G20 Summit and France will be hosting the G7 Summit in 2019. We will both coordinate to champion multilateralism.

 

Maritime security

 

Abe: Both of our countries are Pacific states. We would like to work together for the development of a free and open Indo-Pacific.

 

Macron: Our two countries are working on various economic, foreign policy, security, and defense issues, particularly issues pertaining to the balance and stability of the Indo-Pacific.

 

Japan-France relations

 

Abe: Japan and France are special partners sharing such universal values as freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Cooperation between the two countries is becoming increasingly important in light of the continuing challenge to the international order.

 

Macron: We are linked by very strong bonds as friendly nations.
