Sankei reported on the loss of an Abe-administration-backed candidate in the recent Naha mayoral election in Okinawa, noting that administration-supported candidates have lost a succession of mayoral elections in prefectural capitals. Opposition candidates also prevailed in mayoral elections in Sendai and Gifu. As mayoral races in prefectural capitals are viewed as a bellwether of public sentiment in national elections, the daily said there are growing concerns among LDP officials about the prospects of the party’s candidates in the upcoming Upper House elections in the summer of 2019.
