Ambassador expresses hope for U.S.-Japan trade agreement at Mount Fuji Dialogue

Nikkei reported online on Friday that during the welcome reception for the two-day fifth annual Mount Fuji Dialogue in Tokyo held earlier in the day, Ambassador Hagerty expressed hope for progress toward reaching a bilateral trade agreement, which the paper referred to as a trade agreement on goods. The Ambassador reportedly said he is convinced that Japan and the United States will conclude a trade agreement that is “comparable to the strength of their diplomatic, security, and cultural ties.” The daily also wrote that in light of North Korea’s suspension of nuclear and missile tests, the Ambassador expressed the view that the pressure applied by the Trump administration has prompted North Korea to engage in talks on denuclearization by saying that President Trump’s approach has “created a new situation with regard to North Korea.”
