The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications announced on Oct. 26 that it will allocate a total of 7,072,295,000 yen in base-hosting and adjusted subsidies for fiscal 2018 to 24 municipalities in Okinawa Prefecture which are home to U.S. military and Self-Defense Forces facilities. The ministry, again this year, will subsidize the villages of Kunigami and Higashi, where about 4,000 hectares of the Northern Training Area were returned, in consideration of the villages’ new functions associated with helipad construction and the impact of the construction on the villages’ finances.
Higashi Village will receive 119,420,000 yen and Kunigami Village 78,450,000 yen. Okinawa City will be given the largest amount at 1,366,080,000 yen, followed by Kadena Town at 989,020,000 yen, Chatan Town at 779,430,000 yen, and Ginowan City at 630,970,000 yen. The ministry will allocate a total of 35.54 billion yen in subsidies nationwide.
