The Yokohama municipal government will open an office in New York City as its newest overseas base in November. It first opened an office in New York about a decade ago [which was closed in 2007]. The municipal government aims to lure cutting-edge companies by having an office in the world’s business and information center.
The office will cover North and South America and primarily attempt to attract companies to Yokohama City, focusing on IT and life-science-related firms. It will also collect information on the latest trends in business and culture and the arts in order to reflect these in the city’s policies.
The city will also launch a website to provide information to companies in the Americas and in Yokohama City to coincide with the opening of the NY office. The NY office will be the city’s fourth overseas base, following ones in Frankfurt, Shanghai, and Mumbai. (Abridged)
