Monday’s Sankei led with a report saying that it learned from a GOJ source on Sunday that the Ministry of Defense is making arrangements to stipulate in the new Mid-Term Defense Program to be adopted later this year its plan to attach importance to domestic companies’ participation in the development of a successor to the F-2 fighter jet, which will be retired in the mid-2030s. The paper speculated that the plan is intended to maintain the foundation of Japan’s defense industry and accumulate technical expertise in developing a fighter jet. Noting that the ministry has been discussing three options for the development – domestic production, joint development with other nations, and the import of an existing model, the paper conjectured that although the ministry may forgo including its choice in the Mid-Term Defense Program this time around, it is planning to mention having the Japanese defense industry take the initiative in the development.
