Yomiuri took up an announcement made on Monday by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation that it has signed a memorandum with financial institutions affiliated with the U.S. and Australian governments on extending coordinated loans for infrastructure investment by the private sector in the Indo-Pacific region. Financial support by the three entities will be offered for the construction of thermal power plants and LNG platforms and the installation of telecommunications networks in the region. The trilateral financial partnership is reportedly intended to counter China’s “Belt and Road” trans-continental trade promotion initiative.
