In connection with the introduction of Aegis Ashore, Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya stated at the House of Representatives Committee on Security on Nov. 13: “I think (contracting with the U.S.) will be premised on gaining the local community’s understanding,” indicating that contracts will not be signed with the U.S. without the local people’s consent.

Questions were also asked at the committee about the ballooning costs of Aegis Ashore each time a briefing was given.

Iwaya said: “It is difficult even to make estimates when the deployment sites are still undecided.” He did not provide even a rough estimate of the total cost.

The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan’s Go Shinohara commented: “It is uncertain how much they will cost. With the price tag going up all the time, it is questionable whether Aegis Ashore is a good option.” (Abridged)
