On Nov. 29, an LDP study group on the development of the next-generation fighter to be introduced in the 2030s met with Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya at the National Diet building and delivered to him a proposal requesting that the development of the fighter be started by fiscal 2020 and led by Japanese companies. Iwaya indicated he would advance the debate toward the compilation of the Medium-Term Defense Program in mid-December. “I would like to be able to give a certain directionality [to the development of the next-generation fighter] based on the proposal,” he said. The study group is composed of LDP lawmakers knowledgeable about national defense.
