Poll shows slight increase in cabinet support

TBS reported at noon on the results of the latest JNN opinion poll showing a slight increase in cabinet support to 52.8% and a drop in the disapproval rating to 44.3%. In the poll conducted by phone on Dec. 1 and 2, 56% of respondents approved of Prime Minister Abe and President Putin’s agreement to accelerate peace treaty talks based on the 1956 Japan-Soviet Joint Communique, while 27% disapproved and 18% gave no answer or said they don’t know. On the return of the Northern Territories, 30% favored the return of all four islands together, 49% favored the return of Habomai and Shikotan first and continuing to negotiate on Kunashiri and Etorofu, 5% were for the return of only two islands, 6% said there’s no need for the return of the islands, and 9% gave no answer or said they don’t know. Regarding the ROK Supreme Court’s rulings ordering Japanese companies to pay compensation to Koreans requisitioned to work in Japanese factories during World War II, 9% said the rulings were justified, 81% said they were unjustified, and 10% gave no answer or said they don’t know.
