All national dailies carried updates on the collision between an Iwakuni-based FA-18 jet and a KC-130 tanker plane off Kochi on Thursday. The papers wrote that the III Marine Expeditionary Force confirmed via Twitter on Thursday that two Marines had been found and one was in stable condition but the other was declared dead. The papers also wrote that the U.S. military, the SDF, and the Japan Coast Guard were continuing to conduct search and rescue operations for the remaining five missing crewmembers. NHK aired a similar story this morning. Reuters and NPR reported that at an event at Waseda University in Tokyo yesterday Ambassador Hagerty said, “My heart goes out to the families and colleagues of Marines involved in this tragedy.”
