FM Kono thanks Qatar for help in securing release of Japanese journalist

Monday’s Asahi wrote that during his meeting with Prime Minister Abdullah and Foreign Minister Mohammed of Qatar in Doha on Saturday, Foreign Minister Kono expressed Japan’s appreciation for Qatar’s assistance in the release in October of Japanese freelance journalist Junpei Yasuda, who had been held captive in Syria for more than three years. The paper wrote that Kono also discussed Qatar’s decision to sever diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia and the UAE in June 2017 by reportedly telling the Qatari leaders that Japan is prepared to do whatever it can to resolve the standoff.
