The Ministry of Defense (MOD) on Dec. 21 announced that it will recruit female Self-Defense Force members to crew Maritime Self-Defense Force submarines. The MSDF has traditionally allowed only male members to serve on subs. The MSDF will renovate the barracks of the “Submarine Training Center,” a facility for training submarine crew members, in Hiroshima Prefecture, and an Oyashio-class submarine next fiscal year in order to accommodate women.

The MOD also announced that it will raise the mandatory retirement age of SDF members in the grades of sergeant/ petty officer 3rd class/ staff sergeant through colonel/captain in stages from January 2020. The MOD will extend the current retirement age from 53 to 56 by one year in each of the next three years.
