Tamaki said that in 2019 he intends to devote himself wholeheartedly to fulfilling his campaign pledge to stop the construction of a new military base in Henoko and to work with Ginowan to achieve the termination of operations of MCAS Futenma in five years as well as its early closure and return. Miyakoshi emphasized the “tangible” progress made in Okinawa’s economic development over the years and pledged to work toward developing high value-added tourism and increasing per capita tourist spending. Meanwhile, Iwaya pointed to the government’s efforts so far to engage in dialogue with Governor Tamaki on Henoko relocation and indicated that the government will continue to make efforts to give thorough explanations in order to obtain Okinawa’s understanding.
