Okinawa Times wrote in its top story that the Okinawa prefectural government is mulling the dispatch of a team led by the director of the governor’s office to the UK and Belgium in the near future to study agreements governing the status of U.S. troops in NATO member states. Noting that the prefectural government released last March the results of similar research conducted in Germany and Italy, which showed major discrepancies between Japan’s SOFA and the corresponding European statutes, the daily said Governor Tamaki is interested in collecting more data on the implementation of such statutes in Europe for use as a reference when pressing the GOJ and the USG to revise Japan’s SOFA.
