Nikkei wrote today that 16 member states of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) initiative are expected to convene a meeting of chief negotiators in February with the goal of reaching a basic agreement in the fall. A trade ministerial meeting may also be held in Asia in the spring, with the participants reportedly planning to reaffirm their commitment to concluding a final deal when their leaders assemble in the autumn. Noting that there remains a yawning gap between the Japan-Australia camp and China-India bloc over the speed and scope of regional trade liberalization, the daily explained that New Delhi holds the key to an early conclusion of the mega trade liberalization talks. It added that the gap between Tokyo and Beijing over import tariffs has narrowed considerably.
