U.S., Japanese officials discuss North Korea over the phone

NHK reported online on a teleconference held this morning between Special Representative for North Korea Biegun and MOFA Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau Director General Kanasugi. They reportedly exchanged views on North Korea’s denuclearization and agreed to maintain close bilateral and trilateral coordination with South Korea in calling for the DPRK to take steps toward denuclearization. According to the network, Kanasugi also gave a briefing on Japan-ROK relations, which have been strained lately over disputes about Korean requisitioned workers and a Korean warship’s alleged use of fire control radar.

Meanwhile, Asahi reported online on a CNN story alleging that the Trump administration is exploring the possibility of convening a second meeting between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Hawaii, Bangkok, or Hanoi. The White House has already reportedly dispatched a team to look into candidate locations. The daily took up remarks made by a USG source, who said that a second summit would be realized only after the two governments’ working level officials, such as Special Representative for North Korea Biegun, meet first.
