TV Asahi reported on Sunday afternoon that while Yokohama appears to be the preferred location for major casino operators hoping to launch operations in Japan due to its proximity to Tokyo, Chairman Yukio Fujiki of the Port of Yokohama Promotion Association, who is dubbed in Japanese “don” of Yokohama, has voiced opposition to having casinos in the city. Fujiki is known as a powerful business leader who has strong connections to the Kanagawa prefectural government and the national government. He was quoted as saying that Yokohama is not the kind of city that can’t get by without doing such an “ignoble” thing. He also said that there are numerous examples of gambling addiction destroying whole communities and that this could also happen to Yokohama. Fujiki’s remarks have reportedly created a stir since Yokohama is currently weighing the pros and cons of hosting an integrated resort with casinos in its port area.
