At a board meeting held on Jan. 15, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ) granted membership in its Lower House group to ten people, including Katsuya Okada, who was the leader of the “Group of Independents,” and Lower House member Shusuke Ito (from the Tokyo proportional representation bloc), who has tendered his resignation to the Democratic Party for the People (DPFP). As a result, the CDPJ’s floor strength has increased to 68 .
Those who joined the CDPJ Lower House group from the Group of Independents also include former Minister of Construction Kishiro Nakamura and former Minister of Finance Jun Azumi. All nine of them will only join the CDPJ House of Representatives group and will not seek party membership for the time being. (Abridged)
