Economy minister: Japan’s nuclear plant export policy unchanged despite suspension of UK project

NHK and TV Asahi reported this afternoon that at a news conference this morning, Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Seko commented on Hitachi’s decision to freeze its nuclear plant project in the UK. Seko was quoted as saying: “I understand that Hitachi has judged that it needs more time to reach an agreement with the British government and that it will continue discussions toward cooperation with the UK in energy.” He also said there is still a great deal of potential for exporting nuclear plants since a considerable number of countries are seeking nuclear energy development, adding: “Japan, which has experienced the Fukushima nuclear accident, should be able to make international contributions with its safety technology for nuclear plants,” indicating that the government will continue to pursue its nuclear plant export policy, which it has designated a main pillar of its growth strategy.
