Okinawa Times reported on Foreign Minister Kono’s policy speech at the Diet on Monday, during which he commented on English education in Okinawa by reportedly saying that the GOJ will move forward with the internationalization of Okinawa to help it grow further and promote English education in the prefecture with the cooperation of the United States. Speculating that Kono has cooperation with the U.S. military in mind, the paper claimed that some people think that such an idea could lead to the U.S. military bases becoming a permanent fixture in Okinawa. The paper also quoted the foreign minister as telling the Diet that the Abe administration will make efforts to further strengthen the deterrence of the U.S.-Japan alliance and reduce the base-hosting burden on Okinawa by relocating the Futenma Air Station as soon as possible.
