Foreign Minister Taro Kono held a press conference on Jan. 25, during which he touched on recent progress in negotiations between the United States and North Korea. In this regard, Kono referred to whether Japan will call off its sanctions on North Korea in connection with the North’s denuclearization. “We will consider that after North Korea has taken action,” he said, stressing that Japan makes it a principle to have North Korea implement specific denuclearization steps before Japan lifts its sanctions.
