Regarding the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons adopted by the United Nations, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe stated at a plenary session of the Upper House held on Jan. 29 that Japan is not a signatory to the pact because “it was created without being based on today’s security reality and none of the nuclear powers joins it.” With an eye on the DPRK’s nuclear development, he stressed that the government is “responsible for maintaining a deterrence to protect people’s lives and property amid a growing nuclear threat.”
