Abe, Merkel confirm economic, security cooperation

All national dailies reported extensively on Prime Minister Abe’s talks with visiting German Chancellor Merkel at the Kantei on Monday. The papers wrote that the two leaders confirmed the importance of maintaining and strengthening a free and open economic system and cooperating closely amid rising protectionist sentiment in the world. Abe and Merkel also agreed to step up cooperation in tackling new security challenges by concluding a pact aimed at facilitating the exchange of classified information on terrorism and other areas. The two leaders also agreed to work together to pursue a “free and open Indo-Pacific” in view of China’s maritime advancement and confirmed cooperation in urging the DPRK to achieve complete denuclearization.
