NHK carried a report at noon on its exclusive interview with Brian Hook, U.S. special representative for Iran, on Monday. NHK showed the envoy saying: “We had to grant eight waivers to prevent a spike in the price of oil. What we have announced is a policy to get to zero imports of Iranian crude as quickly as possible. We are not looking to grant any future waivers or exceptions to our sanctions regime.” The TV network noted that although the Trump administration has emphasized through this statement that it will not tolerate oil transactions with Iran, Japan and the other countries that have been given a 180-day exemption intend to continue to seek an extension of the waiver since many companies have already started preparations to resume oil imports from Iran.
