The following is the gist of the interpellations at the House of Councillors Budget Committee meeting on Feb. 7:

[Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement]

Yoshihiro Kawano (Komeito): Komeito compiled proposals, including one to clearly state [in the SOFA] that those affiliated with the U.S. military who are suspected of a crime shall be handed over [to Japanese authorities] prior to prosecution. We submitted the proposals to the Chief Cabinet Secretary last year.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga: We take your proposals seriously and want to address the matter.

[Okinawa: Relocation of Futenma Base]

Mizuho Fukushima (Social Democratic Party): A base cannot be built in Henoko unless the Okinawa Prefectural Governor approves the [engineering] design change. The earth-pouring operations should be stopped.

Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya: We want to move forward steadily with this project in order to achieve the complete return of the base as soon as possible.
