The gist of the speech given by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (Liberal Democratic Party president) at the LDP annual party convention is as follows:

Upper House election

In the previous Year of the Boar (2007), our party suffered a crushing defeat in the Upper House election. As party president at that time, I was to blame. With the defeat of our party, politics became unstable and the Democratic Party of Japan came into power. It was like a nightmare. We must not return to those times. Although the upcoming election is bound to be tough, I am resolved to stand at the forefront of the battle and fight defiantly to the end.

Monthly labor statistics

I will fulfill my responsibility to thoroughly examine the labor ministry’s survey irregularities and make all-out efforts to prevent similar problems from happening again.

Foreign affairs

I visited Moscow last month and discussed the peace treaty one-on-one alone with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is an issue that has been left unresolved for more than 70 years. It is not a simple issue, but I will definitely bring it to a close. Determined not to pass it on to the next generation, I will move forward with peace treaty negotiations. Resolving the abductees issue is also my mission. I will do everything in my power to resolve it with the basic policy of not letting any opportunities pass by. I will address these matters and bring postwar diplomacy to a close.

Constitutional amendment

The time has finally come for us to work on amending our country’s Constitution, an ardent wish for our party since its founding. The Self-Defense Forces (SDF) are Japan’s most trusted organization. Let’s put an end to a Constitution-related controversy by clarifying the existence of the SDF in the supreme law.
