Mainichi wrote in a front-page story that the GOJ has decided to remove the cap on spending for defense equipment in light of plans for robust procurement of U.S. hardware, such as Aegis Ashore batteries and F-35 stealth fighters. As the procurement costs for such items are expected to soar, the GOJ has reportedly come to the conclusion that it would not be realistic to specify a cap in the “Mid-Term Defense Program.” The daily voiced apprehension that fiscal discipline may be lost as a result.
