ROK foreign minister to refer to comfort women in speech at UN human rights panel

Asahi wrote that a spokesperson for South Korea’s foreign ministry told reporters on Thursday that Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha is planning to mention the comfort women issue in a speech she will deliver at a meeting of a UN human rights panel to be convened in Geneva on Feb. 25. According to the paper, Kang cited the issue in her previous speech at the same panel last February. The paper wrote that although the GOJ has opposed ROK officials’ references to the comfort women issue at the UN and other international venues by saying they run counter to the spirit of the bilateral agreement for the two nations to refrain from criticizing each other over the issue, but the South Koreans insist on taking it up in the international community as an instance of “wartime violence” that seriously violated human rights.
