Sunday’s Asahi wrote that it has learned from a source connected to the Ministry of Defense that the GOJ is making final arrangements to send the maritime chief of staff and a destroyer to the Chinese navy’s international fleet review to be held near the Chinese city of Qingdao on April 23 to mark the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the Chinese navy. This will be first visit to China by a maritime chief of staff since 2014 and by an MSDF ship since 2011. China did not invite MSDF vessels to its last fleet review in 2009, but the maritime deputy chief of staff attended the ceremony. Noting that Japan and China agreed at their summit meeting last October to promote high-level exchanges between their defense officials, the paper speculated that the dispatch of the maritime chief of staff and a ship is part of efforts to strengthen their relationship.
