Mainichi and Sankei reported on a meeting between Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga and Ginowan Mayor Matsukawa at the Kantei on Tuesday, saying that Suga expressed the GOJ’s readiness to hold at an early date a three-way meeting with the Okinawa Prefectural Government and the city government of Ginowan to discuss ways to seek suspension of operations at MCAS Futenma. Mainichi noted that such three-way talks have not been held since July 2016. The paper wrote that Matsukawa reportedly called on the GOJ to work to achieve the goal of closing and retuning the Futenma base as soon as possible.

NHK carried a similar story on Suga’s meeting with the Ginowan mayor, quoting the municipal leader as expressing concern that in light of the recent referendum, all attention is focused on opposition to Henoko landfill and the fundamental issue of the “burden” of hosting MCAS Futenma is being neglected.
