Japan, Russia hold working-level talks on details of peace treaty talks

Asahi wrote that Senior Deputy Foreign Minister Mori and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Morgulov, who are responsible for working-level discussions on the peace treaty talks between Japan and Russia, held their second round of talks in Moscow on Tuesday to follow up on the talks held between Foreign Ministers Kono and Lavrov in Munich on Feb. 16. The paper wrote that although the officials met for about five hours, neither side has disclosed the details of the talks. Mainichi and Nikkei also reported on the working-level meeting, speculating that they discussed joint economic activities and other issues.

NHK reported online this morning that according to a diplomatic source, the two sides failed to narrow their gap on the issue of sovereignty over the Northern Territories and they discussed the upcoming bilateral foreign ministerial and the vice ministerial strategic talks to be held in Tokyo on April 2.
