Saturday morning’s Asahi wrote that during a meeting with Palau President Remengesau at the Kantei on Friday, Prime Minister Abe pledged 400 million yen ($3.7 million) in aid for the island state, saying that economic support for the relatively wealthy Pacific nation is intended to enlist it as a partner in the creation of a “free and open Indo-Pacific” in the face of China’s diplomatic overtures to court Palau and other island states in the region with various investment offers. The daily said Tokyo is set to deepen coordination with the U.S. and Australia to support economic development in Palau.
