LDP chief Nikai: Fourth term for PM Abe as party president “completely conceivable”

NHK and TBS reported at noon today that LDP Secretary General Nikai stated at a news conference this morning that while it is for the party members to decide whether Prime Minister Abe should serve a fourth term as party president after his current term expires in September 2021, as of now there is “no doubt” that Abe “is working very hard and has fully met the party members’ expectations,” so under the present situation, it is “completely conceivable” that his term could be extended. Asked about the need to revise an LDP regulation limiting the president’s tenure to “three consecutive terms,” Nikai said that there should be “no problem” if Abe is deemed to be “irreplaceable.”
