DM Iwaya comments on plan to hold U.S.-Japan 2+2, host nation support

NHK reported online today that Defense Minister Iwaya stated at a news conference held after the cabinet meeting this morning that coordination is underway to hold a 2+2 meeting of the U.S. and Japanese foreign and defense ministers in Washington as soon as next month. He indicated that the meeting will discuss ways to strengthen the bilateral alliance in space, cyberspace, and other areas based on the new National Defense Program Guidelines adopted last year. Commenting on the Trump administration’s reported plan to ask U.S. allies to increase host nation support for U.S. forces, Iwaya was quoted as saying: “No negotiations have taken place on a review. Past U.S. reports have shown that Japan shoulders the highest level of HNS among U.S. allies. Under the current tight fiscal conditions, we would like to negotiate vigorously to obtain the U.S.’s understanding.”
