NHK reported today that Minister of Agriculture Yoshikawa revealed at a news conference held after the cabinet meeting this morning that there has been a substantial increase in imports of frozen beef, mainly from the U.S., in the 9-month period ending January 31. This increase is at a level close to that requiring the invocation of safeguard measures. However, he said that the current situation still does not call for the imposition of safeguard tariffs, at least during the current fiscal year ending this month. Safeguard tariffs were imposed on frozen beef imports for eight months from August 2017, eliciting protests from the U.S. government.
