NHK reported at noon that Defense Minister Iwaya told reporters this morning that the return of MCAS Futenma, originally planned for FY2022 at the earliest, is now expected to be delayed until FY2023 or later because the new requirement to fortify the soft seabed found in the Henoko reclamation area has made the original goal “difficult” to achieve. The seabed reinforcement is estimated to take three years and eight months and will require detailed design work as well as Okinawa’s understanding and cooperation. Iwaya added that it is hard to say at this point when the overall relocation process will be completed, but the government will make every effort to expedite it.
