The Yomiuri Shimbun conducted a telephone-based survey of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) rank-and-file members. Asked who they think would be most appropriate to serve as next party leader, 25% of respondents said “Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (LDP president),” giving him the highest score. Former secretary general Shigeru Ishiba ranked next at 21%.

The survey was conducted in all 47 prefectures on March 9-10, and answers were obtained from 1,042 persons confirmed to be on the roster of party members. The LDP’s charter allows its president to serve three consecutive terms. But Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai and other party officials are referring to a possible fourth term for the prime minister.

Lower House member Shinjiro Koizumi came in third at 9%, followed by Policy Research Council Chairman Fumio Kishida at 9%. Foreign Minister Taro Kono, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, and former Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Seiko Noda were all at 1%. The Yomiuri Shimbun simultaneously conducted a nationwide public opinion survey, to which a total of 999 persons responded. In this survey as well, Abe topped all others at 14%, followed by Ishiba and Koizumi at 13% and 11%, respectively.
