It is estimated that overseas procurement will account for 941.7 billion yen worth of the defense equipment contracts the Ministry of Defense concludes in FY2019. This is the highest amount ever and is due to the increase in imports of high-performance equipment under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) and other frameworks. Overseas procurement will make up slightly less than 30% of contract value next fiscal year. In contrast, domestic procurement is not increasing. Some Japanese companies are even withdrawing from defense projects. Some say this trend could put Japan’s defense industry at risk. (Abridged)
