Yomiuri, Asahi, and Mainichi reported on Saturday morning on the adoption by the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Friday of a resolution condemning North Korea’s human rights transgressions. Although Japan voted in favor of the resolution, it did not co-sponsor it with the EU as it did in the previous 11 years, apparently out of concern over the possible impact of such a move on ongoing efforts to resolve the abduction issue with the DPRK. Mainichi pointed out that Japan also chose not to issue a foreign minister’s statement hailing the resolution even though it had done so since 2001.
