NHK, TBS, and TV Asahi reported that the cabinet approved on Tuesday a plan for dispatching two senior SDF members to the command of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) on the Sinai Peninsula, which supervises the implementation of the ceasefire between Egypt and Israel. The networks said the dispatch will mark Japan’s first international peace and security cooperation activity not to be conducted under UN auspices, reflecting the new role given to the SDF as a result of the entry into force of the country’s national security legislation in 2016. Under the plan, Japan will dispatch two senior GSDF members to the MFO from April 19 through Nov. 30. Defense Minister Iwaya was quoted as telling reporters afterwards that this will demonstrate a visible contribution by Japan to the peace and security of the Middle East and expand the scope of its international contributions.
