Saturday morning’s Asahi took up the disclosure by an unnamed State Department official on Wednesday that the Trump administration has reportedly decided not to send officials to an international conference on China’s “Belt and Road” initiative that will be held in Beijing in late April because of its disregard of the international order and lack of transparency when extending international loans. Noting that the USG has criticized the Belt and Road program by calling it “debt-trap diplomacy,” the daily said the absence of U.S. officials from the planned confab signifies that the U.S. plans to maintain a hard line toward China.
