Sankei led with a report claiming that it learned from a GOJ source on Thursday that the itinerary of President Trump’s planned visit to Tokyo next month includes viewing sumo at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena on May 26, and that the U.S. side has conveyed to the Japanese government its hope that the President will be able to present the Prime Minister’s cup to the tournament winner. The paper wrote that the idea of a foreign leader presenting the trophy on the prime minister’s behalf is highly unusual. The paper also wrote that since there is a possibility that the President will step into the sumo ring together with Prime Minister Abe, relevant agencies are studying how to deal with the security challenges.
