Asahi wrote that the Naha branch of the Fukuoka High Court upheld a lower court decision to reject the demand by some 3,400 residents around MCAS Futenma that flights at the base be suspended by saying that Japan “is not in a position to restrict the operations of U.S. military aircraft.” Although the high court ordered the state to pay 2.12 billion yen ($19 million) to the plaintiffs for damages sustained due to aircraft noise at the base, this was lower than the 2.46 billion yen ($22 million) previously awarded by the lower court.
